Made in Lebanon
An exhibition by Marwa El Shazly
September 2013
Mashrabia Gallery, Cairo, Egypt
In this recent interview conducted at Mashrabia Gallery during the opening of her solo exhibition, Egyptian artist Marwa El Shazly explains the concept behind her latest series, which takes up Lebanese pop divas as its theme. Through mixed media paintings, El Shazly re-presents these icons by using the simplest and most affordable materials that can be found on the local market as references to the visual props and mass production of the regional showbiz industry. Like much of her work, these music icons are thus used to project the interplay of power, money, and mass media.
